Top Tips To Save Money Whilst Traveling

1. Choose your Accommodation Wisely

There are many different types of accommodation to consider when you’re visiting a new city but hostels, couch-surfing and homestays are some affordable options. So many places even allow you to volunteer by teaching English, or housesitting in exchange for free accommodation.

2. Exchange your Currency in Advance

I once met someone at the airport who lost their credit card and ended up having to ask a stranger to help them withdraw cash before exchanging it at the airport. If you shop around in advance, you can usually take advantage of the best rate.

3. If it’s Free, It’s for Me!

Free activities don’t always have to be boring. Did someone say free Masala Chai tasting? Don’t mind if I do.

4. Cook for Yourself

Often when I am traveling for extended periods of time, there’s nothing that I crave more than sitting down to a warm, home-cooked meal. If you are staying at a place with a kitchen, cooking for yourself is a great way to save money as the prices of food and drinks can add up quickly.

5. Look out for Discounts and Deals

These days, travel company websites and apps often have last-minute discounts and deals on things like tours and accommodation. If you have flexible travel plans, it can save you a lot of money.

6. Know when to Splurge vs Save

No, you probably don’t need another keyring in the shape of the Eiffel Tower. But tickets to the Louvre could provide you with memories that you’ll never forget.

7. Travel on Foot

Sometimes the best way to see a city is to simply walk. The distance between one city attraction and another could very much be one stop away. For what it’s worth, the view from Fisherman’s Bastion can’t be seen from the window of a train.
