Corfu: The Lush, Emerald Island of Greece

Corfu: The Lush, Emerald Island of Greece

Having done very little research before our arrival to the Island of Corfu, I had no idea what to expect. I’ve visited many islands of Greece in the past but this was my first time in Corfu and I’ve never experienced a Greek Isle quite like this before.

The fact that it is so lush took me by surprise and there are endless amounts of olive groves wherever you turn. 60% of the island is covered by Cyprus trees, citrus fruits, olive groves and vineyards, so one can only imagine the aromas with every breath of air. Here are some stunning sights and experiences to have when traipsing through beautiful Corfu.

Old Town
Is rustic and charming in its own way. Here, you will find tons of shops, restaurants, and plenty of beautiful, narrow alleyways to get lost in. The Old Town is also one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites that you can find in Greece. Quaint, aged and awaiting to be explored, Old Town, Corfu is a gem.

Old Fort
Rich in history and the most famous castle in Corfu, the Old Fort is visited by many and it sits on a gorgeous harbor making for a perfect photo op.

Spianada Square
The central square of Corfu Town and the largest square in the Balkans.

Achilleion Palace
Built in the honor of Greek God, Achilles, the palace was designed by a legendary Italian architect and its gardens are spectacular.

Paleokastritsa
One of the most beautiful villages of Corfu, famous for its gorgeous beaches and views surrounded by olive groves, lemon and cyprus trees. Here, you’ll discover incredible rock formations, crystal clear waters and narrow caves. The trip will take you about 40 minutes from Old Town by car but it is definitely worth the drive.

Often called the “Capri of Greece”, Paleokastritsa is home to the secluded and peaceful Byzantine Monastery of the Virgin, which is still inhabited by the friendliest monks! I was fortunate enough to receive a blessing from one of the monks who is originally from Argentina 🙂

Acharavi
This area offers a view of the Albanian coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, hop on a 90 minute boat ride to the city of Saranta, Albania or you can just admire it from afar.

Golden Fox
Located in the Village of Lakones overlooking the bay of Paleokastritsa, the Golden Fox has one of the most breathtaking views in Corfu. The Golden Fox offers a cafe as well as accommodation and it has one of the most gorgeous viewpoints in Corfu. Staff is friendly and wifi is free!
