Beyond the Resort: Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Spa and Resort

Cozumel is a beautiful island in the Caribbean sea located just off the Yucatan Peninsula opposite to Playa del Carmen. With its white sand beaches and its gorgeous turquoise water, it’s the perfect destination for those seeking both fun and relaxation. I can definitely appreciate adventure after a few days of relaxation. Luckily, during my stay in Cozumel, Presidente InterContinental Resort and Spa offered plenty of activities to choose from.

Cozumel is quite famous for scuba-diving and snorkeling. Although a license to scuba-dive is needed, snorkeling is an activity anyone can do. We jumped on a boat that picked us up at the resort’s port and we sailed away to some of the best coral reefs in Cozumel. My favorites were El Cielo and Palancar.

El Cielo is an incredibly serene place and it has the clearest water I have ever seen! It’s not too deep and you can swim to the bottom to take a close look to some gorgeous yellow starfish!

Palancar was also very beautiful. The water was much much deeper and a bit darker but you could see countless kind of fish while floating around, it was like being in a whole other world down there!

Another incredible experience we experienced on this trip was taking part in a Temazcal Ceremony.

A Temazcal (translated with “house of heat”) is a kind of sweat lodge used in ancient Mesoamerica to cleanse and purify the mind, the spirit and the body, to heal and also used to aid women giving birth.

A local shaman guided us throughout the ritual. We crawled inside and sat crossed legged on the ground as he began placing the heated rocks in the circular ditch. Shortly after, he dropped the curtain that was letting the light in and in almost total darkness, began pouring the water onto the rocks and chanting. It got really hot really quick!

The ritual was divided into four phases and the main focus was to get rid of negativity. During each phase, the shaman would put more rocks into the ditch and the temperature would increase. By the end of the ceremony, my clothes were completely drenched but I felt amazing! I also noticed my skin was much softer than usual.

I highly recommend experiencing a Temazcal, it’s a great way to get out of your comfort zone!

Tequila Testing
I’m not normally a big fan of any strong alcohol but food and drinks can teach you a lot about a culture so I couldn’t leave Mexico without trying some of the best tequila produced in the country.

During our last night at the resort we got to taste 4 different kinds of Tequila: Blanco, Reposado, Añejo & Extra Añejo.

Each one of the tequilas we tasted had a different distillation process and time, as well as distinct different flavors and strength. We end up our evening making s’mores by one of the bonfires.
