Zurich, Switzerland is a beautifully vibrant cosmopolitan city, located within easy reach of the magnificent Swiss Alps. I’ve called the city home for a while now, yet it still takes my breath away. Read on to find the most picturesque spots to visit in Zurich on a tour I’ve given many (many!) times to visiting friends and family.
The historic spot of Lindenhof is located atop a hill that overlooks the river Limmat, the old town and the tall mountains. With panoramic views over the river and the old town, it’s no wonder that it’s one of the best spots to capture the beauty of the city. It’s my favorite place in Zurich to visit at sunset.
Address: 8001 Zürich; To reach Lindenhof, head to Bahnhofstrasse and take a turn into Rennweg.
The Grossmünster Church
The twin spires of Grossmünster are one of Zurich’s most recognizable features. Located at the banks of the River Limmat, this church has beautiful stained glass windows and imposing bronze doors. Visit at sunset for the best pictures of the church glowing in the light.
Address: Grossmünsterplatz, 8001 Zürich
Located across the bridge from Grossmünster is the Fraumünster church. Beautiful Gothic architecture and incredibly rich 1000-year-old history make this church a delight to visit. The square of Münsterhof where this church is located is just as photo-worthy too!
Address: Münsterhof 2, 8001 Zürich
The charming old town of Zurich is lined with cobblestoned streets and pretty shops and cafes. Stroll through the streets and get lost in them — every turn will bring you to a beautiful photogenic spot!
Address : Marktgasse 9, 8001 Zurich
Lake Zurich is one of the best features of the city! Lined with a beautiful promenade, the lake makes for the perfect place to take a stroll. The stunning views, the swans, ducks and other birds swimming in the water, and the beautiful mountains in the distance make for an incredible experience.
Some of the most photogenic spots for the lake include the quays near the station Burkliplatz, the bridge between Burkliplatz and Bellevue and the promenade starting from Bellevue. Visit at sunset to capture the sun going down behind Uetliberg, Zurich’s own mountain!
Uetliberg is Zurich’s very own mountain, albeit a small one at only 870 meters compared to the rest of the Swiss Alps! The mountain offers panoramic views over the city, the river and the lake — an absolutely breathtaking sight!
To reach the mountain, take the S10 train up to the mountain station or if you’re up for it, take a hike — you’ll get great views and tons of opportunities for stunning pictures. Make sure you get to the summit at sunset for the best light over the lake and the city.
If you love the mountains (and really, what’s not to love about the Swiss Alps?), head on to Mount Rigi in Lucerne, about an hour away for some of the best views across 13 lakes and the peaks of the Jungfrau region.
Sechseläutenplatz is one of the largest squares in Switzerland and home to the pretty Zurich Opera House. Lining the square are several cafes and restaurants making it the perfect spot to relax.
Visit after dark for the best shots of the beautiful Opera House. Catch a show and see the stunning interior too.
